All behind a cut.
I liked this more than last week in some ways, though not necessarily in a bouncy way. What strikes me about both of these episodes is that we seem so far to be seeing everything from Dean's PoV and not from Sam's. Even when we got Sam scenes this week, they were more detached without an insight into how he's seeing his situation. If we're going for tension, then sure, that's the way to go: if we know what Sam's thinking then we'll lose a lot of tension that's created currently because Dean doesn't know what's going on with the cousins and doesn't trust them. Still, this is a show about two brothers and at the moment it feels like it's about the experiences of just one of them, and that's starting to bother me. I want to know what's going on in Sam's head, or at least be able to see the world as he sees it - what does he really think of Grampa Creepazoid and the weirdo cousins? Is he so shut down that he's really in the dark about what's going on there? I think that's possible (he did seem quite surprised by Dean's questioning of his motives) but from a pure logic standpoint it doesn't seem likely, and that bothers me. After all that happened in the last couple of years, we shouldn't still be concerned about whether the boys are on the same side. Show me some Sam perspective and I'll be much happier. Also, please take that peculiar look off Sam's face - it's disturbing.
Hmmm. So, apart from that, there was a lot to love about this ep. Excellent exploding babies, fascinating new myth stuff, Lisa being a complete star and taking charge, the boys doing their thing together, Sam being the protective one and wanting Dean to stay safe in the panic room (aw, bless), Dean realising he's turning into John, Sam naming the baby after John while Dean named him after Bobby, Dean and his true baby *g*. And the music came back! Woo hoo!
Bad moment was Cousin Jonas throwing Dean's experience in hell in his face. What a complete dick. But, really, how the hell did he know? There's no way on earth or any other planet Sam would have said anything about that. Sam's not talking about his time in hell, and he certainly understands why Dean didn't want to (both from an 'oh shit, sounds horrifying' perspective and from a 'been there, done that' perspective) so I simply cannot believe he'd say anything even to people who are supposed to be some kind of family. He just wouldn't. Which means someone else is telling tales out of school, and considering Grampa Creepazoid's behaviour has made me doubt his story of being 'pulled down' (seems far more likely he was 'pulled up') it may well have been him. The psycho!Campbells still all need to be run over by Dean's truck, although the vaguely nice one is already gone. One less for Dean to worry about.
