Peculiar weather

Doctor Who
May. 30th, 2010 01:53 pmI actually liked the Doctor in yesterday's episode, which I think is a first for me as opposed to just tolerating him (still not impressed with his acting). But I had a couple of issues with the episode.

May. 2nd, 2010 08:51 pmYeah, there's something... missing? Not quite right? The new bloke still hasn't grown on me, and at episode 5 I'm no longer expecting him to. I generally like Amy, but don't like how she was represented on this week's episode.

Doctor Who ep 2
Apr. 11th, 2010 10:40 pmEr, hmmm. Well, this episode was better. I still much prefer Amy to the new Doctor, but fortunately he's calming down a bit and is not such a bundle of spinning, incoherent energy. Hopefully that trend will continue. The story in this episode was better, too, with more complexity, more depth, more emotion, and more of the kind of thing I'd been expecting from the new showrunner. The 'big message' was piled on with a trowel, which was the only significant miss for me. Subtlety doesn't appear to have been discovered yet this series. I'm encouraged, though.
I've watched the first new episode, and there's some good acting and some bad acting. The woman playing Amy (the new companion) gets two thumbs up, but the new Doctor? Oy. It's like he's the bad fanfic version of the last one. I can't figure out if it's just that it's a spectacularly bad example of acting, if he's trying too hard to impersonate the last bloke, if it's the writing (which is way more RTD level than I was hoping for, honestly), or if it's a mixture of all of the above as well as the phase of the moon, the weather in Bognor, and whether the Queen's in residence or not.

Doctor Who
Jan. 2nd, 2010 01:58 pmWell, I preferred this episode to the first one, but am just glad it's over. Could have done without all the SG-1 and Star Trek ripoffs, because DW was always something out there on its own, only borrowing from elsewhere but never too obviously. So, it's done now. Not convinced at all by the new guy, but I suppose I'll try a couple of episodes in the new series and give it a shot. I can drop telly fairly quickly if it's doing nothing for me, so I'm not worried.
