Song lyrics in fic

This is one of those 'if you don't like it, don't read it' things, I know, but still... I'm finding that random song lyrics inserted into fic either to be meaningful to the characters (yikes!) or as some kind of faux-deep-zen thing at the start of a scene or chapter just irritates the heck out of me. I really don't find them deep or relevant or anything else. I've often never heard of the band, let alone the song, and it's just a bunch of words that some song-writer decided meant something to them at the time and which rarely make sense even when you have the whole lyric sitting in front of you. Plus, is it really some sentiment or message the writer feels they can't get across on their own in the 35,000 words they've just written? Why are they there? And why are they always so chuffing random? Why?

*sigh*

Is it just me? And is it because I find it irritating that it seems to be everywhere or is it actually becoming increasingly common?
