Vista is supposed to defrag on a schedule. According to my settings, it defrags my computer every week on a Wednesday. Things have been running a bit slow of late, though, so I've been going through all the usual things to fix that. I set off the defrag about 5 hours ago, and without being able to see any kind of progress meter (vista took away what we used to be able to see with XP) I have no idea how much longer it'll take, nor what the heck it's doing. One thing I do know is it's taking up more and more space on my hard drive. So far it's used 14 gig doing whatever the heck it's doing. It had better give that space back to me when it's finally done, and I'm mightily suspicious of this idea that it claims to do this defragging every week. If that's the case, how can it possibly be taking this long? Good grief.

Woah! Any reason you're defragging every week? That's far more often than you need to, unless you're constantly installing and uninstalling new programs or moving large files around.

I hate Windows' defrag....it's incredibly slow and inefficient. :(

Um... honestly, it was the default setting on vista when I go this computer. When I had XP on the old machine I defragged when I remembered, which was usually about every 6 months, and it never took this long.

Today I've uninstalled a pile of crapware that came with the laptop to give me back some space (office 07, MS works, other nonsense) and put some files on a backup drive that I don't use that often. So there's been quite a bit of changing things around which is why I set this going. Looks like I'm going to need to leave it going overnight.

That's odd. I don't remember my Vista having a defrag schedule - but I rarely run defrag as it is.

If you really need to Defrag, try Auslogics Disk Defrag. I use it and CCleaner together (they're both free).
