I was reading some article about a new programme being made for 'linear TV' and I had to think about it for a minute before I realised what they were talking about. My immediate thought was it was peculiar to have this new term but I would get used to it. My second thought, only a few seconds later, was that my habits are already non-linear in the sense they mean it. I don't watch live telly any longer, I pick recorded things off my PVR to watch when I fancy. These days it's only important that I know when one instance of a programme is on so that I can set the series link. Alternatively, I'll have a hunt through 'on demand' to see if there's anything decent to watch.
So how long until the linear concept vanishes completely? I guess it'll take a while, but for a growing minority it may well have already passed beyond the horizon. The ease of use of current and upcoming tech to personalise viewing is too good for people to go back once they're in the habit. Sadly, there's still no sign of a decent, affordable, programmable holodeck. Damn it.
