I was reading some article about a new programme being made for 'linear TV' and I had to think about it for a minute before I realised what they were talking about. My immediate thought was it was peculiar to have this new term but I would get used to it. My second thought, only a few seconds later, was that my habits are already non-linear in the sense they mean it. I don't watch live telly any longer, I pick recorded things off my PVR to watch when I fancy. These days it's only important that I know when one instance of a programme is on so that I can set the series link. Alternatively, I'll have a hunt through 'on demand' to see if there's anything decent to watch.
So how long until the linear concept vanishes completely? I guess it'll take a while, but for a growing minority it may well have already passed beyond the horizon. The ease of use of current and upcoming tech to personalise viewing is too good for people to go back once they're in the habit. Sadly, there's still no sign of a decent, affordable, programmable holodeck. Damn it.

Date: 2007-11-23 11:01 pm (UTC)I haven't owned a television for... wow, over a decade now. All our viewing is either DVDs or downloaded stuff on the computer.
I'm guessing that eventually TV eps will just have a release date instead of a broadcast time. Hmm, maybe the standard episode length of 42 minutes will cease to be standard, since there's no reason it has to fit into the broadcast/commercial schedule. Wonder what would happen if an ep could be however long it needed to be? Better, or worse?

Date: 2008-01-02 06:35 pm (UTC)I've been pining for a holodeck since the first time I saw one, but still nothing. All that 'virtual reality' nonsense is far more virtual than reality, and since I can't sit on it, drink it, throw it, taste it, kiss it or hug it, it's nowhere near good enough.
In the interim, I'm looking forward to the situation you're talking about, where eps are released on a date and are as long as they need to be. With no adverts, too - who the heck would sit through those if they didn't have to? Better still, let's just release eps into my holodeck and we can go from there.
