I'm watching a programme right now and it's about the 'purity' movement in the US, purity balls and how girls and their fathers have these freakish relationships. Fucking hell, this is what the world's regressing to?

Am stunned.

In other news, there's such a thing as the 'Flat Earth Society'. I've looked at the Disclaimer and am pretty sure it's a wind-up. But honestly, after this purity stuff, it's getting harder and harder to tell reality from complete idiocy.

I stumbled upon this blog a while ago:

courtneyscontemplations. blogspot.com
(put the spaces together, I don't want a link)

It's scary. I mean, the girl does look happy, but she'll get married to a guy she hasn't even touched, and everything was cleared by her dad before.

courtneyscontemplations. blogspot.com/2008/02/its-our-7th-month-anniversary.html
(same thing with the spaces)

This is the post I stumbled upon, where she explains it all.

It's scary. How can one compromise with this, without knowing about other options?

Actually, (and I can't believe I was bored enough to take a look) they had met - he just asked her father's permission to write and court her. A bit old fashioned and more of a southern mentality, but not a big deal.

However, it definitely sounds like she's a fundamentalist evangelical -- probably southern baptist. THAT is scary.

I work with a Baptist preacher and his wife and they are cool people, but you get in with those fundamentalist evangelicals and we're talking major wackos (i.e. Palin).

You are right, I read a bit more. But she hasn't hugged or kissed the soon to be husband, though. Very scary.

She also made some comments regarding homosexual marriage and the King James Bible that are scary too.

I looked at Southern Baptist at wikipedia. Oh my.

If she's a fundie, not surprised about the homosexual marriage part -- MAJOR bigots.

As for the KJB - don't even get me started. That's one of the first things I point to when they try to say the bible's "God's word"; if that's so, why has it been edited??

Unfortunately, when I was younger my first experience with baptists as an entity was with a southern baptist church. They were hosting bible school and the night they had the children's awards program, they showed this stupid film based on Revelations and scared my mentally-handicapped teenage neighbor so badly she was sobbing and had to be taken outside.

The baptist preacher - wife duo I work with have no problem with evolution and are of a live-and-let-live mentality with homosexuality and such, so obviously all baptists aren't nutjobs; it's too bad southern baptists are the ones who tend to get the attention.

I think the Flat Earth thing is pretty much a spoof - and rather amusing too! Their membership survey page asks people to list their "favourite radioactive isotope" which made me laugh. But then I've been in a funny mood all day....

I've heard of the Flat Earth Society and unfortunately I get the impression they actually believe this stuff.

I'm pretty sure they're the nutcases that are always trying to say the Apollo moon landing was a hoax.

It can be pretty scary in some areas on this side of the pond.
