When I'm working at home these days I sit at a rollaround desk near the back window and can see all the birds coming and going in the garden. Today, like every day, the collared dove pair flew in to sit on the fence and have a look around before moving off to eat from the bird table. Only this time they didn't move off. Dove one got on top of dove two and they had a quick shag, in an impressive demonstration of balance. About ten seconds later they were done, dove one settled back on the fence and they had a bit of a nuzzle. Then it was lunch time.

Does this mean it's officially spring?

Bird watch

Just before Christmas I bought a bird feeder stand which has various hooks, a table and a water dish. I've now hung two feeders (seeds and peanuts), I load up the table with more seed and the latest hanging thing is a peanut cake which hangs off another hook. I've been getting more visitors as the weeks have gone by, and a wider variety. So far there have been collared doves (a pair that have been visiting my garden for a few years now), thrushes, blue tits, chaffinches, green finches, starlings, robins, pigeons, sparrows, blackbirds, and today my first great tit (very pretty it was too!). I have my desk positioned so I look out onto the back garden, so it's nice to see a flash of movement and watch the latest visitors coming for dinner.

With all the snow, I've been out and put a lot more food out, and the birds have been really getting through it. I bought more today. This could get expensive.
